Justin Does…Cancún, México

Let’s face it – this whole winter thing is getting old. As much as I love cold weather, mountains, and snowboarding, I can only take so much of it at a time. Some friends and I decided to head south for a long winter weekend for some sun, fun, and relaxation.

DO The most obvious thing to do is hit up the beach and Cancún has some of the best beaches in North America. Almost all of the major hotels in the Hotel Zone are situated on the sand. Stake your claim on the beach, slather on the SPF 45, and sip a frothy {adult} beverage.

SEE Get Ruin’ed. Cancún is situated in the heart of the land of the Maya. Consequently, old temples and ruins litter the region. Some ruins can be found right along the Hotel Zone {e.g., El Rey} and more famous ruins {Chichen Itza} are a somewhat short drive away.

EAT It’s a certainty that you will get plenty of tacos, burritos, and nachos throughout your stay. So head to Harry’s Prime Steakhouse and Raw Bar which is situated on the lagoon in the Hotel Zone. Granted, it’s the furthest Mexican food that you can get, however, the menu is spot on and the service is impeccable. You can get a perfectly cooked steak {I recommend the Cowgirl Ribeye} or fresh fish and shellfish. Don’t be surprised when the waiter brings you a large {I mean LARGE} portion of cotton candy when dropping off your check.

AFTER PARTY No trip to México is complete without a wild night out on the town. Head to Coco Bongo. Granted the cover is steep {~$70}, but that includes bottomless drinks {just tell yourself that it is top shelf liquor}. The time flies by with the fun music mix, the overhead acrobatics, top of the bar dancing, and movie clips seemlessly orchestrated to keep you entertained for hours.

STAY The Hotel Zone is where you will want to stay when in Cancún. Live Aqua Cancún has a clean and modern feel. Oh, did I mention it’s adults-only? Live Aqua Cancún is across the street from The Isla Shopping Mall which has some great shopping, including Lacoste, Louis Vuitton, and Coach.

GETTING THERE Fly into Cancún International Airport {Airport Code: CUN}.

Insiders Tip: Pre-arrange a car service to take you to your hotel so you can avoid the taxi hassle after clearing immigration and customs.
